Little Adventures is a series where I talk about the wonder that can be found in the small moments and the everyday, no expedition gear required.

Grant Park was a beloved part of my childhood. Whether it was a family outing or a school field trip, it was the backdrop to many childhood memories. It was one of my first introductions to the outdoors, and I feel like part of it belongs to me because of the time I spent there when I was younger.

Two people with long boards and dry suits were out in the waves when I gingerly stepped down the icy staircase leading down to the beach. They were taking advantage of the surf which was larger than normal. Water crashed against the shore, and white caps whipped foam into temperamental monstrosities out on the lake.

The wind soon made my hands and face numb, so I retreated into the woods. Grant Park is known for its beaches, sand bluffs, and it’s exceptionally beautiful ravine. There are stairs and bridges that criss-cross this ravine forming the historic Seven Bridges Trail.

I walked through the quiet woods. Only a faint sound of crashing waves could be heard in the distance. Happy New Year, go spend it outside.
