Little Adventures: Spring Thoughts

Little Adventures is a series where I talk about the wonder that can be found in the small moments and the everyday, no expedition gear required.

For those of us living in northern climates, the first day of spring is typically not warm, or sunny, and is definitely not the idyllic pastoral scene associated with the end of winter. It mostly just mud, and rain, and a dirty mound of snow that refuses to melt.

The beginning of anything, whether it be a new season, or a new hobby, relationship, or job is never seamless, and typically begins in a helpless state of absolute awkwardness.

The process of learning and growing takes time. As I wandered around my backyard today, I couldn’t help but think about change, and transitions. How the earth is still frozen in some places, how waking up takes time (especially since it’s still pretty frosty most mornings.)

Still, the drab of late March and April is overlooked and underrated in my opinion. I still find beauty in nature during this time of the year. The piles of wild berries and nuts harvested by squirrels. The bare branches that create patterns against a sky that stays light into the evening. The sound of geese flying at night, heading north for the summer. The chorus of birdsong that grows every day as robins and orioles return.

This season’s drab bare canvas creates space for the masterpieces that will follow. The long rest is over. Now we begin again.
